2008

For the 2007 season KSL added 4 new players, Jon Oberg, Joe Snider, Ty Palmer and Pat Tuttle. The 2007 season had seen the biggest expansion since they moved from 6 teams to 8 in 2004. This was also the first year since 2002 where we saw some teams not make the playoffs. This was the start of making the playoffs the main focus of KSL.

Week 1-5

KSL was divided into 2 divisions of 6 teams with the division leaders receiving the top honors.

Over at PBnJ we had Brian lose his first game but go on to win his next 4 in a row to be the top dog over there. Kevin was able to start off hot by winning 3 in a row before losing his next two and falling to 3-2. Newbie Ty Palmer won 3 big games to also finish 3-2. Meanwhile we had Dave Pate and Jon Oberg win their first games but lose the next 4 to drop to 1-4. Andy also had a similar start by going the same.

Over at 5BBB we had Aaron jump out to an early lead by winning his first 5 in a row. Amazingly enough, 3 others were 3-2 and fighting their way for the second place in the division. Doug, Mike and Joe won various games to achieve this feat. Blake had won 2 games during this stretch and Pat had only won one game.

Week 6-10

We saw many teams turn their season around during this stretch of games. Brian went 3-2 which moved him to 7-3 and kept him in first for his division. Kevin did the same and improved him to 6-4. Ty Palmer only won two games so he was sitting even at 5-5. Dave Pate bounced back from a 4 game losing streak to win 3 and improve to 4-6. Andy had a rough season and he finished this stretch at 3-7. Jon suffered the same fate and was at the bottom with Andy at 3-7.

With 5BBB we saw Doug take a lead over Aaron by winning 4 games in a row and improving to 7-3. Aaron suffered four losses in a row to bring him down to 6-4. In the reverse, Blake won 4 straight to improve to 6-4. Mike was only able to get a couple wins to go 5-5 for this series. Joe hit a rough patch and was only able to win 1 game and so he fell to 4-6 for the season. Meanwhile Pat was able to get 3 key wins to improve to 4-6.

Week 11-13

These are the two biggest weeks in KSL and help determine not only who will make the playoffs, but who will be the divisional winners.

After Week 12, Brian was the divisional winner and finished with an impressive 9-4 record. Kevin suffered 2 key losses to fall to 7-6 and miss out on the divisional title. Dave Pate was able to get 2 big wins and finished the year 6-7. Ty Palmer lost his last two games but was able to squeak into the playoffs as one of the bottom seeds. Andy was able to get 2 big wins but he needed the third to make it into the playoffs. Oberg lost 2 of 3 and missed out too.

Over at 5BBB, Aaron was able to turn his season around and win his last 3 games to take the division and the 2nd seed. Doug was close behind and went 9-4 but missed out on the division title due to tiebreakers. Blake won his last 2 games to improve to 8-5. Mike lost 2 in a row but won his last game to make it into the playoffs as the 8th seed. Joe was only able to get 1 win during this stretch and missed out of the playoffs by one game. Pat fell in all three of his games and finished 4-9, tied for last place.

Playoffs

Brian was heavily favored against Mike in the first round, but Mike was able to defeat Brian to move on to the next round. Blake came in as the 4th seed and was able to take down Kevin in the first round. 2nd Seed Aaron Hughes took out Ty Palmer in a revenge game from earlier this season. Heavily favored Doug Hahn fell victim to the 6th seed Dave Pate.

In the second round, we had Mike Smith defeating Blake Clayton to earn a shot at the Matchett Cup. Meanwhile we had returning champion Aaron Hughes taking on former champion Dave Pate. Dave was able to beat Aaron and make his way to the finals.

In the final match, we saw Mike Smith defeat Dave Pate in a close match for the title. Mike was excited to finally win the big one and put his name on the Cup.

Legacy

The move to 12 teams proved to be very popular but it wouldn't be until 2011 until we moved back to 12 teams. 2007 was one of the most popular years because of the drama that surrounded the playoff push at the end. The 4 owner addition was also popular. Ty Palmer and Joe Snider became big players in KSL down the road and Oberg was very excited to join and he became very active in KSL.
