2004

In 2003 the commissioner decided to try the other play style for Fantasy Football. This style was known as the points system. As opposed to head-to-head matchups, you added up your points throughout the year and winner was the team with the most points. In addition to these changes, KSL lost Shawn Werderman but gained two new competitors in Aaron and Mike.

Week 1-5

During the first 5 weeks we saw Frail break out into an early lead. Many of the others were close to the middle but newcomer Aaron was 200 points behind the next lowest team. 200 points was almost a full game and so he would have some catching up to do.

Week 6-10

During this stretch of the season we saw the gaps get a little larger for the top teams and the bottom teams. Frail still had a 100 point lead over the next owner. Aaron had fallen 300 points behind the next team.

Week 11-17

Frail had not only pulled out ahead but he started to increase the gap against the other teams. Meanwhile, Brian, Kevin and Andrew were in a close race for the 2nd place spot. Mike, who was in that race, had a few bad weeks and so he dropped 200 points behind the next team. In last place, Aaron was about 400 points behind Mike.

Eventually, Frail was able to win by a commanding 350 points over his next rival. Brian was able to get a few points over Kevin and Andrew. Mike was in 5th place isolated by being 300 points under Andrew but 200 points over Aaron.

Legacy

Moving to the points system in 2003 was an interesting choice. KSL was new and so there was some experimentation going on. The move to the point system was an interesting one and it allowed for the stronger teams to continue strong throughout the year. The positive side to doing a point system is that a strong team wont get bounced in the playoffs. The downside is that once you are at the bottom of the league, you stay there. Aaron had scored the most points in week 16, 17 and would have had a chance to make a run in the playoffs. No one knows how things would have played out but it doesn't matter since Frail was able to dominate the whole year.

We did an analysis of what could have played out if we did head to head and if we did a 6 team playoff, Lance and Brian would have received first round byes. The 3rd and 4th seeds of Kevin and Andy would have moved on to the next round and taken on Brian and Lance. Both teams would have defeated them and moved on to the finals where Kevin scored the most points. Of course, this is just a hypothetical as Lance Frail won the 2003 KSL Championship.
