2013

At the start of the KSL 2012 Season, KSL decided to do the first ever, live board draft. It was an event that took about 6 hours to complete but many people really enjoyed the festivities. After it was over, Yahoo said Dave Pate had the best overall draft and it predicted Brian would not get a single win. We saw the Yahoo didn't do a very good job of making predictions. Jon Occhi took over for Mike Smith who, after drafting his team, decided he needed to take the season off. Occhi was very eager to rejoin KSL and was ready to make up for his previous records. However, part way through the season Occhi quit KSL and so we left his team as is.

Week 1-5

For the start of the 11th KSL Season we saw some owners take an early lead.

Within the PBnJ division we saw Dave Nanninga take an early lead and win 5 straight. Closely behind him was Kevin at 4-1. Andy and Ty Boardman were at the bottom with only 1 win each. However, the two bottom teams had super close games and they were ready to have a better set of games going forward.

The LULZ division saw Ty Palmer take a different route this year and actually win a few games. He started off the year as the divisional leader with 4 wins. Jon Occhi wasn't far behind with 3 wins and Dave Pate was right behind him with 2. At the bottom of the LULZ division was Brian with only one win so far.

The 5BBB division had Aaron take an early lead with 4 wins. Joe and Oberg were tied at 2 wins a piece and Doug was at the bottom with only 1 win so far. Doug had a tough schedule at the beginning and so he lost a few games that were very close.

Week 6-10

PBnJ's owners saw some catching up. Dave Nanninga had lost his first match of the year to rival Kevin Smith and Kevin ended up being 1 game behind him through week 10. Ty Boardman was able to win a couple of games and was able to hand Nanninga his second loss of the season. Andrew was able to win a couple more games including a win over League Leader Ty Palmer.

Ty Palmer was able to extend his league even more by only getting one loss in the 5 week span. Dave Pate was close behind but was able to be one game behind Ty through week 10. Occhi's team went on a losing streak but was able to get a surprise win over Kevin. Brian won a couple of close games and was able to finish 2-3 for the 5 week span.

Aaron started off by losing to rival Doug and again to Nanninga. He was able to get 3 other wins and was still in control of his division. Snider was able to get a couple of big wins but lost some close ones and was a couple games behind division leader Aaron. Doug was able to start off with 2 wins but lost his next 3 and was in danger of being out of the playoffs. Oberg was able to snap a 4 game losing streak on week 10 by beating Ty Boardman. However, he was still far away from making the playoffs.

Week 11-13

Nanninga had a rough start to the final playoff push by losing his first two games. Kevin was in the same boat by losing the same two games. As fate would have it, they played each other week 13 and it was for the division and the 3rd seed in the playoffs. Dave happened to win that day and secure the 3rd seed in the playoffs. Ty Boardman had another one of his late season runs by winning his next 2 games and a win over Andrew in week 13 would secure him the #6 seed. Andy was the heavily favored team but, just like in 2011, Ty was able to have a great week and Ty made it in the playoffs. In a strange turn of events, even though Andy lost he made it in due to some of the other teams winning.

Ty Palmer was in firm control of his division but a couple of losses and Dave Pate's win streak made week 13 be a much bigger game than expected. Palmer was able to beat Dave for the 2nd time that year and secure himself the 2nd seed in the playoffs. Dave was able to secure the 4th seed which meant he took on a team that was on a long losing streak. Meanwhile, Brian went on a nice winning streak and was going to make the playoffs if he beat Occhi and if Andy won in week 13. Brian did beat Occhi but Andy wasn't able to overcome Boardman's late season charge. Luckily, Occhi's phantom team was unable to make the playoffs.

Aaron had won his division early on in the final weeks of the playoffs due to Snider's string of losses. Aaron was playing for the 1st seed and the chance to go on a nice win streak into the playoffs. He was able to take down rival Andy and finally Snider to win his last 5 games. Despite Joe's string of losses, he was able to get a couple wins and make it into the playoffs. Doug and Oberg were on the bubble and their losses in week 12 knocked them out of the playoffs. In week 13 they played each other and Oberg was able to beat Doug for the second time that season. Surprisingly enough, 3 of Oberg's wins came when he faced his own division.

Playoffs

In the first round of the playoffs we had the #1 seed Aaron Hughes take on #8 Joe Snider. Aaron was able to win for the third straight time in a row and move onto the second round of the playoffs. Next we had #2 Ty Palmer take on #7 Andrew Hughes. Ty was able to get a close victory despite Andy having a big game. #3 Dave Nanninga took on #6 Ty Boardman. Unlike the last two years, Ty wasn't able to make another run to the championship. Finally, we had the #4 Dave Pate take on #5 Kevin Smith. Dave helped extend Kevin's losing streak by knocking him out of the playoffs.

In the Next round we had Aaron taking on Dave Pate and Ty Palmer taking on Dave Nanninga. This was a rarity in KSL to have the top 4 teams make it past the first round. Palmer made short work of Nanninga but Dave Pate and Aaron's game went down to the wire. Despite putting up the 2nd most points that week, Aaron lost to Dave Pate who put up the most.

In the Matchett Cup Finals Dave Pate took on Ty Palmer to become the new Champion of KSL. Dave Pate was able to beat Ty and take home his second championship.

Legacy

Dave became the 3rd 2-time champion in KSL History and the first and only to win the points league and the head to head style.

A couple of things that happened this season caused for concern. We decided to make a couple changes after things got a little out of hand during the season. We saw too many pickups for injured players and so we have talked about possibly doing a waiver wire system to give others a chance to pick up players. We also saw too many draft pick trades for too many high round picks. This can cause some unfairness in the following season and so we are limiting how many draft pick trades can go through in the following years. Lastly, we saw the Team Defenses get too many points and so we are cutting back on the number of points they will receive for 2013.
